Independence and growth
One of the greatest advantages of working in private practice with a focus on assessment is the flexibility it offers. I have the opportunity to collaborate with various agencies, including the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), the Department of Children and Families (DCF), and the Cornell Scott Hill Health Center and its clinical teams. This breadth of collaboration allows me to apply my expertise in different settings, tailoring my assessments to meet the unique needs of each organization and the populations they serve.
Beyond agency work, I have also been fortunate to establish connections with local school districts. These relationships have allowed me to step in during staffing shortages, support schools during high-volume assessment periods, and consult on complex cases that require a higher level of expertise. Being able to assist in these moments has reinforced the importance of adaptable, comprehensive assessments in educational settings, ensuring that students receive the appropriate support and interventions they need to succeed.
Recognizing the evolving nature of psychological assessment, I have invested both time and financial resources into enhancing my skill set. I have pursued training in specialized tools such as the ADOS-2 and MIGDAS for autism assessment, as well as various cognitive and academic measures. Additionally, I have deepened my knowledge of neuropsychological principles, allowing me to apply a more integrative approach when evaluating clients across different settings. This ongoing commitment to professional development ensures that my assessments remain relevant, evidence-based, and impactful.
In addition to refining my technical skills, I have attended trainings focused on improving the quality of my client feedback sessions. I have learned how to present results in a way that is accessible, actionable, and tailored to each client’s needs. Effectively communicating findings and recommendations is just as crucial as conducting the assessments themselves, as it empowers families, educators, and professionals to take meaningful next steps.
The flexibility of private practice has allowed me to evolve my work in a way that aligns with both my professional interests and the needs of the community. Each assessment I conduct is an opportunity to bring clarity and guidance to individuals and families, whether through collaborations with agencies, consulting with schools, or working directly with clients. The more I learn and grow in this field, the more I appreciate the dynamic nature of psychological assessment and its profound impact on the lives of those I serve.
